As Coronavirus (Covid-19) infection cases proliferate across the world extraordinary measures are being taken to limit the spread. With the outbreak, our ICU departments have seen significant increase in admissions. For us it was vital to quickly understand the impact the coronavirus has on patients. 

Maltron's BioScan touch i8 was used to assess and monitor Covid-19 patients to understand the impact. This non-invasive device provides vital and valuable information of the patient's fluid status along with other important parameters. As a result this enables us to make supportive clinical decision in the treatment of patient care. 

During our assessment of Covid-19 patients we quickly found fluid overloaded patients did not respond as effectively to treatment often resulting in mortality. We therefore urgently need more of Maltron BioScan touch i8 devices to effectively diagnose, monitor and understand the progression of the pathogen and its effects. 

Routine monitoring with the Maltron device will enable us to better understand the changes taking place within the patient's body. Helping us to determine patient fluid responsiveness and guide individualized therapy for better patient outcome.

ln our ICU department my team and I have routinely been using the Maltron device for a period of time. Assessments are performed on critically ill patients to assess and monitor both fluid overload and dehydration, Malnutrition, and the loss of Muscle Mass. 

A full clinical assessment can be performed bedside and within a matter of seconds, providing information about lntracellular and Extracellular water volume along with lntra and Extravascular volume which provides us with a better understanding of fluid distribution and reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications. 

Fluid overload is commonly found in critical care patients and studies have shown a correlation between fluid overload and mortality. lt can aisa lead to several complications and lungs are ane of the organs in which adverse effects of fluid overload manifest quickly leading to acute pulmonary edema or acute respiratory distress syndrome. 

Therefore managing the optimisation of fluid balance is pivotal in choosing the appropriate therapy in critically ill patients' including with COVID -19. 

ln an A & E setting or in the inpatient or outpatient setting monitoring of these patients with the Maltron device could be vital. We know mild case of COVID- 19 in itself are not dangerous. However, in some cases more commonly in older people and in people with underlying chronic medical conditions can progress to a moderate case that could require some supportive care such as fluids for dehydration, typically in hospitals that are overwhelmed by the most acute cases. 

We believe the Maltron device plays a pivotal role in the day to day assessment and monitoring of Covid-19 patients and should be made available in all lCU departments as a matter of urgency.
